According to the National Institutes of Health the risk factors and disease states that are associated with Metabolic Syndrome are:
Overweight disorders and obesity
High blood pressure
Dyslipidemias including high triglyderide levels, high levels of total and LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol
High fasting blood sugar
Type 2 diabetes
Cardiovascular disease leading to heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease
Certain cancers, including breast, prostate, endometrial and colon
Osteoarthritis
Gallbladder disease
These chronic degenerative diseases are associated with accelerated aging and early death. Having just one of these conditions (increased blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, excess abdominal fat or cholesterol levels) contributes to your overall risk of serious, life-threatening diseases. In combination, these conditions dramatically increase your risk profile for serious disease.
Patients who have these diseases also show increased rates of (i) depression, (ii) insomnia, (iii) sleep apnea, (iv) chronic stress and (v) anxiety reactions.
RISK FACTORS
The Mayo Clinic indicates that the following factors increase your chances of acquiring Metabolic Syndrome.
Age – The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome increases with age, affecting less than 10 percent of people in their 20s but 40% of people in their 60s.
Race – Although Metabolic Syndrome may be seen in all races, Hispanics and Asians seem to have a greater risk for insulin resistance risk factors.
Obesity – A body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 indicates an overweight disorder and increases the risk of Metabolic Syndrome. Evidence of excess fat is usually most prominent in the abdominal region.
History of diabetes – If you have a family history of type II diabetes or a history of diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), your chances of developing Metabolic Syndrome increase.
Other disease – A diagnosis of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or polycyctic ovary syndrome also increases the risk of Metabolic Syndrome.
However, there are other risk factors that lead to Metabolic Syndrome. Blood lipid disorders, including high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and high LDL and total cholesterol enhance plaque buildups in artery walls, which lead to atherosclerotic (plaque) disease. Occlusive vascular disease is further stimulated by (i) pro-inflammatory states, with elevated C-reactive protein in the blood stream and (ii) pro-thrombotic states with high fibrinogen and/or high plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 levels in blood. Increased potential for inflammation and thrombosis (blood clotting) add to atherosclerotic plaques that form in arterial vessels. People with Metabolic Syndrome are therefore at increased risk of life-threatening coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
DIAGNOSIS
There are no precise criteria for diagnosing the metabolic syndrome at the present time. However, The American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommend that the metabolic syndrome be identified as the presence of three or more of the following components:
Elevated waist size (circumference)
Men – Equal to 40 inches or greater
Women – Equal to 35 inches or greater
Elevated triglycerides
150 mg/dL or greater
Reduced HDL (“good”) cholesterol
Men – Less than 40 mg/dL
Women – less than 50 mg/dL
Elevated blood pressure
Equal to or greater than 130/85 mm Hg
Elevated fasting glucose
Equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL
CAUSE
Metabolic Syndrome appears to be caused by the following dietary factors:
Excess carbohydrate in the diet, including refined sugars and starch-rich foods.
Normally, the digestive system breaks down dietary carbohydrates into glucose (sugar). The blood carries the glucose to the body’s organs and tissues, where the cells use it as fuel. However, insulin is required for glucose to enter cells. In people with insulin resistance glucose entry into cells is greatly reduced and glucose levels in the blood rise to abnormally high levels. Abnormally high blood sugar gives rise to insulin resistance through pathological processes that involve protein glycation and crosslinking that lead to advanced glycation end products that further stimulate inflammatory reactions throughout the body. These pathological processes are described in greater detail below.
Protein Deficiency Syndrome
High carbohydrate diets are normally deficient in protein. Unfortunately, humans and other mammals can only produce 11 of the 20 amino acids required for protein health. The remaining 9 amino acids must, by necessity, be obtained from the “food chain.” Protein deficiency occurs when the diet is deficient in the 9 essential amino acids that humans do not produce. Protein deficiency is associated with a decrease in positive-charged proteins that lead to poor protein health and unbalanced metabolic pathways that give rise, together with abnormal carbohydrate metabolism, to the Metabolic Syndrome.
FACTOR4
Factor4 Weight Control™ contains Power Amino Acids™ that close the gap in the food chain and provide the 9 amino acids required for balanced protein health. Power Amino Acids™ have been shown to increase positive-charged proteins that are decreased under conditions of protein deficiency (see “The Importance of Protein Health” on this website). Thus Factor4 Weight Control™ corrects Protein Deficiency Syndrome and resets metabolic pathways that:
Suppress appetite and block food cravings, hunger pangs, famished states and eating binges.
Curb carbohydrate intake through loss of the desire for carbohydrate-rich foods (loss of the “sweet tooth”)
Burn fat by resetting metabolic pathways from fat storage to fat metabolism
Stimulate weight loss and sustained weight control
Thus Factor4 Weight Control™ combats both overweight disorders as well as many of the risk factors and diseases associated with the Metabolic Syndrome by rebuilding the body with “supercharged health” leading to balanced protein expression. By correcting Protein Deficiency Syndrome and rebalancing metabolic pathways, Factor4 Weight Control™ combats overweight disorders and Metabolic Syndrome naturally by rebalancing the caloric equation according to Nature’s laws.
In contrast, the medical profession has taken the traditional approach of using pharmacologic agents to treat the specific risk factors associated with Metabolic Syndrome. These pharmacological agents may include (i) weight-loss medications, (ii) blood pressure medications, (iii) cholesterol medications, (iv) insulin-resistance medications, (v) anti-thrombotic medications, (vi) blood thinning agents, (vii) anti-depressant medications, (viii) sleep medications and (ix) anti-anxiety medications. However, many of these pharmaceutical agents have cumulative side-effects which may exacerbate the aging process associated with Metabolic Syndrome.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Lifestyle changes, which include increased physical activity, losing weight and quitting smoking to help reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels, are also recommended. Specific recommendations are as follows:
Exercise – Doctors recommend getting 30-60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, every day.
Lose weight – Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can reduce insulin levels and blood pressure and decrease your risk of diabetes.
Stop smoking – Smoking cigarettes increases insulin resistance and worsens the health consequences of Metabolic Syndrome.
Dietary changes - Specific dietary changes that are appropriate for addressing different aspects of the syndrome include the following:
Reducing saturated fat intake to lower insulin resistance
Reducing sodium intake to lower blood pressure
Reducing high-glycemic carbohydrates to lower triglyceride levels
A diet that includes more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, mono-unsaturated fats and low-fat dairy products will benefit most patients with Metabolic Syndrome.
METABOLIC SYNDROME REPRESENTS A CONTINUUM OF METABOLIC DISORDERS
The real importance in recognizing Metabolic Syndrome is that it represents a continuum of metabolic disorders that range from (i) type 2 diabetes with accelerated heart disease to patients with (ii) heart disease independent of diabetes to (iii) normal individuals suffering from accelerated aging to (iv) death from all three conditions.
Cardiovascular degeneration in all of these conditions appears to be due to disturbances in carbohydrate and fat metabolism leading to a cluster of metabolic abnormalities, including high blood sugar, high insulin, insulin resistance, high triglycerides, low HDL and small, dense LDL particles.
The new insight is that these pathological processes that lead to atherosclerosis are operating in all of us. While those with Type 2 diabetes are further along the curve and display accelerated cardiovascular disease, the rest of us are moving along the same curve but at slower rates. Taken to its full extent, the metabolic continuum defines a pathway from (i) normal individuals to (ii) individuals suffering from Metabolic Syndrome to (iii) individuals suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
The rate of “acceleration” is determined by multi-factorial processes related to genetic endowments, inherited from parents through long lineages of ancestor populations. The rate of acceleration is also determined by good medical treatment in the case of existing disease. For example, numerous studies have shown that good management of blood glucose levels through the careful administration of insulin, prolongs the life of diabetic patients.
SUMMARY
It appears that excess dietary intake of simple sugars and complex carbohydrates leads to multiple dysfunctions in carbohydrate metabolism, including (i) hyperglycemia, (ii) hyperinsulinism, (iii) insulin resistance, (iv) oxidative stress, (v) protein glycation, (vi) formation of advanced glycation end products and (vii) inflammatory reactions that result in a continuum of metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease), hypertension, cancer, and a long list of blood abnormalities that appear to be associated with Metabolic Syndrome, accelerated aging and early death.

SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH
In the scientific and medical breakthrough of our time, Dr. Scheele, the Founder of NovaLife, has discovered that poor dietary intake of protein leads to “protein deficiency syndrome” that imposes serious consequences on body health. Due to the selective loss of positive-charged amino acids, the body can no longer rebuild or replenish a large group of positive charged proteins or enzymes. As these enzymes diminish and ultimately disappear, the body’s ability to maintain youth fails.
Dr. Scheele has further shown that ingestion of power amino acids™ rapidly rebuilds positive-charged proteins that correct “protein deficiency syndrome” within minutes and ultimately leads to supercharged health.
ANABOLIC AND CATABOLIC METABOLISM IN MAINTAINING YOUTH
Although you cannot feel it, your body is rebuilding itself every day. This minute-to-minute process of body rebuilding depends on protein in your diet. When protein levels in the diet optimize the rebuilding process, the person achieves a state of health, happiness and good nutrition, described here as “anabolic” or “supercharged” health.
When protein is deficient in the diet, the rebuilding process slows down and ultimately stops. When the rebuilding process is interrupted the body enters a catabolic state, which increases the potential for accelerated disease and aging
During development and maturation, the body’s hormones ensure that the metabolic processes are tuned to health and reproduction. Once the aging process begins in the thirties, there occurs a slow decline in hormones that leads eventually to poor health, accelerated aging and ultimately death.
The state of youth, characterized by hormonal health, may be described as an anabolic state. “Anabolic” means increasing or constructive metabolism. This state leads to optimal health and performance.
The state of aging, characterized by diminishing levels of hormones, may be described as a catabolic state. “Catabolic” means decreasing or destructive metabolism.
Supercharged health is characterized by anabolic processes associated with a complete portfolio of proteins, including both negative-charged and positive-charged proteins. In contrast, poor health is characterized by catabolic processes associated with a relative absence of positive-charged proteins.
The critical element here is that catabolic states can be converted into anabolic states by supplementing the diet with Power Amino Acids™. Thus, Power Aminos™ can optimally convert destructive metabolic processes into constructive metabolic processes. This can convert poor nutritional health into supercharged health. Fortunately, it can also revitalize or reinvigorate youth.
Thus Power Amino Acids lead to supercharged health by modulating two metabolic processes:
Anabolic (constructive) metabolism is increased.
Catabolic (destructive) metabolism is decreased.
